Casting Cooler

The JOEST Casting Cooler is an energy-efficient conveying system for the controlled cooling of castings. It is based on a mass-compensated resonance trough with an eccentric shaft drive – without micro-throw motion – enabling uniform, low-noise material transportation with minimal foundation loads.

Typically installed between the shakeout and sorting conveyors, the system stands out due to its modular design, robust steel construction, and ease of maintenance. Honeycomb-type dampers and optimized springs ensure stable operation under high loads – with low energy consumption and easy installation.

An integrated counterflow heat exchanger ensures high thermal efficiency. Optional air humidification is available to increase cooling performance.

The JOEST Casting Cooler is based on the principle of a mass-compensated resonance conveyor trough, specifically designed for the gentle, uniform transportation of heavy castings. The trough is part of an oscillating system consisting of trough mass, working springs, and compactly integrated vibration absorbers. This configuration is excited subresonantly by an eccentric shaft drive.

The system operates at a precisely calculated natural frequency and generates a harmonic oscillation in which kinetic and potential energy alternate. The active mass compensation provided by the vibration absorbers nearly eliminates the restoring forces of the working springs – resulting in only minimal dynamic forces being transmitted to the foundation.

In contrast to conventional micro-throw systems, material transport here is uniform and smooth, with no abrupt movements. This not only protects the castings but also reduces noise levels and mechanical stress on adjacent machine structures. The drive requires only minimal power – inrush current remains low, even at high load levels.

The result is a highly efficient, vibration-optimized conveying system that is especially well suited for longer conveying distances and high mass throughputs – with significantly reduced foundation loads and increased operational reliability.

The JOEST Casting Cooler is a vibratory conveyor specifically developed for foundry operations to provide thermal and mechanical treatment of castings. It is typically used immediately after the casting process to reduce the temperature of the cast parts and prepare them for downstream processing steps such as shakeout, inspection, or sand removal.

The machine is based on a resonantly oscillating two-mass system with a heavy-duty steel structure. Oscillation is generated via an eccentric shaft drive that interacts with a precisely tuned spring mechanism. A compact vibration absorber integrated into the system ensures high oscillation stability even under variable load conditions.

A key feature of the Casting Cooler is the elimination of micro-throw motions. Instead, the material is transported smoothly and evenly, which protects the castings and minimizes noise. The machine’s natural frequency is precisely calculated and enables conveying distances of several meters with a single drive unit.

The system design avoids the need for heavy concrete foundations – instead, it is built on a sturdy steel frame that allows for fast setup, minimal foundation requirements, and easy maintenance. For the cooling process, the system is equipped with a customized airflow configuration. An optional air humidification unit can be integrated to further enhance cooling performance.

Fields of Application

The JOEST Casting Cooler is specifically designed for use in foundry applications and is ideal for the controlled cooling of castings immediately after the casting process. It is installed between the shakeout and inspection conveyors and ensures uniform temperature reduction prior to further processing or quality control. Thanks to the gentle conveying motion, the sophisticated airflow concept, and high thermal efficiency, the Casting Cooler is also suitable for demanding production environments with high material throughput.

Individually Configurable

Equipment Options

To ensure optimal integration into your foundry processes, the JOEST Casting Cooler offers a wide range of mechanical and airflow-related configuration options – individually adaptable.

The cooling channel can be designed as open or enclosed – depending on space constraints, safety requirements, and the desired cooling concept.

Integrated airflow with fans, nozzles, and air ducts enables targeted airflow and uniform cooling along the conveying path.

Targeted air humidification improves heat transfer – ideal for high casting temperatures or short conveying distances.

The Casting Cooler can be divided into multiple cooling zones to enable different temperature profiles along the conveying path.

To reduce noise emissions, low-noise variants and sound-insulated enclosures are available for sensitive production areas.

The trough can be individually adjusted in width, depth, and shape to match casting size, weight, or discharge behavior.

The Casting Cooler can be modularly extended with downstream functional units such as shakeout, inspection, or sorting conveyors.

Using frequency converters and tailored drive systems, conveying speed can be adapted to process or temperature requirements.

Complete control system including temperature monitoring, zone control, and drive management – easily operated via touch panel.

Especially robust construction, optimized springs, and reinforced steel frame for maximum loads and long service life in foundry operations.
