Separation, Compaction & Crushing

Spiral Crusher

JOEST Spiral Crushers are highly compact, multifunctional units designed for foundries using cold-resin bonded moulding sand. They offer a unique combination of shakeout, crushing, screening, and vertical conveying in a single machine. Thanks to their innovative design, Spiral Crushers combine several essential steps of the sand reclamation process – from shakeout of the moulding box and effective lump reduction to the conveying of reclaimed sand.

Their strengths are particularly evident in space-constrained plant layouts: the vertical spiral path enables fine sand to be conveyed upwards within a minimal footprint – for example, directly to a sand cooler or magnetic separator.

Thanks to its robust design, FEM-verified fatigue strength, and cooled drives, the Spiral Crusher is particularly well suited for demanding sand reclamation applications. Throughput rates of up to 10 t/h with grate surfaces up to 2,800 × 2,800 mm highlight the machine’s performance capabilities. Positioned upstream of a magnetic separator or sand cooler, the unit supports both the reuse of moulding sand and process optimization in foundry operations.

The Spiral Crusher performs four essential functions within a foundry line:

  • Shakeout of the moulding box via an integrated grate system

  • Crushing of the resulting sand lumps on a rotating friction grate within the crusher pot

  • Screening of oversize particles using an interchangeable screen mesh within the spiral shaft; oversized material is automatically recirculated into the crusher

  • Vertical conveying of fine sand via a spiral-shaped lifting path – for example, to a sand cooler or magnetic drum

The lump reduction is achieved by the circular movement on the friction grate. Oversized particles are reliably separated, while fine sand is continuously discharged. Maintenance-friendly features such as a removable grate plate and controlled discharge openings ensure easy cleaning and maintenance of the machine.

Maximum grate surface: up to 2,800 × 2,800 mm

Throughput capacity: up to 10 t/h (material-dependent)

Crushing unit: friction grate floor with rotating circular motion

Conveying path: spiral-shaped vertical shaft
